Behind the scenes with Bibhu Mohapatra

Bibhu Mohapatra might be considered to be the new kid on the block seeing that his line is just over 3 years old but don’t let that mislead you. His small (but growing) label is making big waves in the fashion world. I was honored to have had the chance to meet the talented (and charming) Bibhu through my adorable friends at Kiss My Face (click here for their story) and the rest…well, the rest is this post ;)
I went down to the garment district to visit Bibhu in his studio and I wanted to share with you all a little bit of what goes on inside a designer’s studio before New York Fashion Week…so don’t just stand there…ring the buzzer and come on in…

First off, I shot his absolutely talented and dedicated team cutting, sewing, measuring and above all listening to Bibhu’s direction…everyone was working hard to make the smallest of details perfection and honestly, I can’t imagine the amount of stress that they must feel during the days before the show but the energy in the studio seemed focus and dare I say…calm?!! But I think good energy leads to great work…so they may be onto something with their zen-like vibes ;)

Of course I did not shoot any pictures of the pieces which will debut next week (you’ll just have to wait and see those beauties pop up all over the blogosphere) but I did want to give you guys an idea about his designs. Below you can enjoy some of my favorite looks from his Resort 2013 collection. Two things I feel describe his clothing: impeccable tailoring and elegant lines. I wanted to take every single piece and add it to my wardrobe.

And one of the coolest things I saw while going through his clothes…the tag inside all his items.

Yep, these fabulously gorgeous designs are made in right here in New York City…now that is definitely something you don’t see everyday. And lastly, I wanted to share with a very classy, sophisticated, intelligent lady that adores his designs…yes, that’s the absolutely fabulous First Lady Michelle Obama rocking Bibhu’s beautiful printed dress from his Resort 2013 collection…and I have to say, Mrs. Obama looks every bit the style icon I have grown to believe she is.I hope you enjoy this tour of Bibhu’s studio and that you’ll remember his name because trust me, he’s moving rapidly in this fashion world and I have little doubt that soon we’ll be seeing even more of him on the red carpet and beyond.
