A dinner out at De Rodriguez Cuba

At the time of this post, I was 38 weeks pregnant…and being offered to chance to try out Miami’s newest AAA 4 star restaurant was a no brainer…I mean, when you’re pregnant, you simply can’t pass up the chance to have a delicious meal. So the hubby and I went out for dinner…and what would unknowingly be our last dinner out as a couple sans children. We headed to the Bentley Hilton and walked into their De Rodriguez Cuba restaurant for a true Miami inspired meal.
(Side note: It was really hard to take clear shots because of the lighting but trust when I tell you that the food looks absolutely beautiful upon presentation)

We started the road to la Cuba with these delicious smoked Marlin tacos…they were light enough to enjoy as a starter and the perfect way to taste the flavors of our local fish.

We also tried their ceviche sampler which gave us four different varieties to enjoy. My personal favorite was the tuna watermelon ceviche…talk about a refreshing way to enjoy a hot Miami night.

Next up, some new takes on traditional Cuban dishes like a serrano ham croquettas and a innovative way to enjoy a Cuban sandwich…on a stick ;)

We continued on our Cuban journey with sugarcane tuna, crispy pork belly and a vaca frita skirt steak….all items were delicious and innovative.

And lastly, we finished off the evening with a yummy goat cheese flan and a chocolate/hazelnut ball of deliciousness. We rolled out of the restaurant having finished a wonderfully balanced Cuban meal infused with the uniqueness and creativity that makes Miami Beach so special. Congratulations to the whole team at De Rodriguez Cuba for receiving this prestigious award…what an honor to represent such a strong part of Miami’s vibe in such a delicious way ;)

That’s us…literally drunk with food….but loving every minute of it ;)

The Do’s and Don’ts of Preggo Talk

So…as I reach the end of my pregnancy, I am reaching my level of tolerance for the comments that I hear on a daily basis. Most of the time, people are genuinely happy and sweet with their words, but you’d be surprised how often I have encountered less than stellar words from people…which leads me to this post, here are just my personal thoughts on what you can and can’t say to a pregnant women:
(by the way, this picture below is me yesterday…showing off the bump and proud!)

“Wow, you’re stomach is really small”- Ummmm, a small belly is not necessary a good thing when you’re pregnant. I personally felt really protective when people used to tell me I was really small…because when you’re pregnant, you want to know your baby is growing and getting big. It’s better to mention how beautiful the belly is and never comment on the size.

“Wow, you’re huge!”- Ugh, this is one of my least favorite things to hear…If you say this to me, expect a fake smile and a heavily dosed sarcastic response somewhere along the lines of “yeah, that’s what happens when you’re pregnant”. Again, stay away from mentioning the size of a woman’s belly.

“Enjoy the last days of your freedom”- I hate hearing this…like I have just sentenced myself to prison when in fact, this was a decision we made as adults and we willingly put ourselves in a position where our life would change…and we’re excited for it. Yes, things won’t ever be the same, but we have had a wonderful first chapter and we’re excited for the next one.

“You’re planning on breastfeeding, right?”- This question is only acceptable when it’s not implied and when it’s not coming from a stranger. I 100% believe that every woman should feel free to do as they feel is best for themselves and their baby. Some women can’t breastfeed or don’t want to and that’s okay. It’s not for anyone to chose for them. I am planning on breastfeeding but I do feel defensive when I’m asked about it as if that’s the ONLY way to do things. It’s not your business and it’s definitely not your place to tell any woman what/how they should care for their baby.

“I can’t believe you’re working out/bike riding/walking in heels/carrying groceries/dancing/etc…you need to be more careful.”- Here’s a news flash, pregnant women are not fragile. The female body is amazingly strong and yes, I do feel a little more winded than I did prior to being pregnant, but I certainly don’t feel fragile or weak. I trust myself, my body and my baby…and I have common sense. If I feel that something is not possible for me to do or it causes me any pain, then I don’t do it. I’m a big girl…I know my limits so please don’t tell me what I can and can’t do.

“Aren’t you scared?!”- This is such a loaded question. When I tell people “no”, they immediately tell me why I should be. I feel like there is such a weird fixation with today’s society and labor horror stories. It’s kind of gross and definitely not appropriate to bring up to a pregnant woman. So instead of going down that road, better to say “women are truly amazing to be able to handle something so incredible as childbirth”…that’s bound to get you a better response ;)

And my least favorite thing comes from other parents…usually from parents of not well behaved children:
“This is what you have to look forward to”- This sentence usually comes when a parent has their hands full with a loud, crying, screaming child. Then they’ll see me and my belly and say that line. I bite my tongue because what I would like to say is “just because you can’t raise a well behaved child doesn’t mean I can’t”. Guess it’s true, misery does love company…but I’m too busy keeping company with blissfully happy to accept that invitation.

So here’s looking forward to less of the above and more of the following:
“You look great!”
“You’re glowing and your belly looks beautiful!”
“You must be so excited!”
“Your life is going to change in a wonderful way!”
“Babies are amazing!”

Dreamsicle!

Yep, I’m round, I’m wearing horizontal stripes and it’s quite possible that from far away I may look like a dreamsicle…but isn’t that delicious ;) I love being able to play with fun spring and summer colors lately. As chic as black is, color is like wearing a smile. You simply feel good. I wore this comfortable outfit out the other day for an early bird dinner with the hubby. It was perfect for the warm afternoon sun and transitioned beautifully for the breezy evening later.

Last Minute by Spa Finder

In this day and age, it’s a miracle we can accomplish all the things we have on our plates let alone find time for a little pampering so the new service by the SpaFinder team is perfect for the modern day busy lady (or man). I was invited to lunch on a private yacht (yes, rough day for me) and chat with the CEO of SpaFinder, Pete Ellis, about their newest addition, Last Minute. So come and cruise away with me ;)

SpaFinder’s Last Minute service is such a simple yet needed concept. Book a last minute spa or wellness session (think Pilates, barre classes, yoga) at some of the most luxurious centers in your city at massive savings…meaning you (and your last minute whim to get a facial) get to reap the benefits.
Personally, I love the idea that I can book a session without advance commitment. The lunch and launch of this event in Miami was like a mini-getaway for me. We had a beautiful cruise around the bay and enjoyed delicious food, tropical juices and the most fabulous views of the city. Thanks to the SpaFinder team for having me! I can’t wait to start using the Last Minute aspect!

Pregnancy Fit at 35 Weeks

Hi Guys!
I’m back with my latest installment of Pregnancy Fit. This week I wanted to talk about keeping with a plan and really pushing yourself to stay healthy and fit. I hope it didn’t come across pushy…let me know and I’ll gladly give myself the side-eye ;)
As for the workout to do at home, this is an easy and fabulous stretch. It feels amazing to open up your shoulders…especially because we all tend to lean in (due to computer work, cell phones, etc.). Great way to counteract that.

Casual chic in spring colors

I am so happy for the warm weather and the long days of sunshine…sorry to rub it in, but in Miami, the weather is all Spring and even some summer already…and it feels amazing ;) Here is what has become my “go to” outfit as of late…a comfy and colorful shirtdress, a cute hat and some flats. It works for my preggo self and in my opinion, it looks pretty chic too.

I’m wearing:
Mango shirtdress: I bought this dress in every color they made. It’s soooo comfortable, effortless and chic. After the baby is born, I can still wear this dress by belting it with a little, relaxed skinny belt. Versatile fashion is always a must ;)

Pregnancy Fit at 34 Weeks

From Latham Thomas’ “Mama Glow” book:
“This swell-quelling salad is the antidote to edema. If you’re sensitive to onions, you can skip them and it will still be amazing. This seasonal salad is hydrating and cooling on warm summer days and helps to reduce swelling caused by heat, poor circulation and edema. Watermelon is a powerful food, rich in vitamins A, B, C, lycopene, magnesium and potassium.”

One 5-pound watermelon
1 red or Vidalia onion
1/2 cup fresh chopped mint leaves
1/2 cup fresh chopped cilantro
1/2 cup fresh chopped parsley
4 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Salt and pepper, to taste

Cut the watermelon into 1 inch sized chunks and place in a large bowl. Slice the onion into thin strips and soak in enough cold water to submerge the onions, for at least and hour. Discard the water and remove the onions. Add the onions, mint, cilantro, parsley and lime juice to the watermelon. Gently mix and season with salt and pepper.
Finish and enjoy!!

Shift in attitude

I’ve been asked a lot about my maternity style and I have honestly been surprised at how many non-maternity pieces I am able to wear. The most important rule in maternity wear is to stay true to your style and never be afraid to try it on. I bought this dress at Banana Republic after having fallen in love with the material and the color. I bought it a size bigger than I normally wear and voila! it zipped! A shift dress is always in style and in my opinion, it’s the perfect silhouette for a preggo…so go ahead, hot Mommas to be…step into that dress in the window. You may be surprised at how it fits!

Banana Republic ponte shift dress- This dress is not maternity, but it’s stretchy fabric definitely allowed me and my belly look fashionable.
Trina Turk for Banana Republic clutch: This limited edition clutch is one of my favorite pieces in my closet. The shape of the closure and the colors…perfection!

Chantecaille Blogger Brunch at Saks Bal Harbour

Any time I can spend my morning shopping, learning and brunching at Saks Fifth Avenue in Bal Harbour is time well spent ;)
I was invited to the private preview of the Chantecaille makeup line and spend the morning with some other lovely Miami Fashion Bloggers. We learned a lot about this small family run business that features a big eco-friendly vision and a compassionate heart. Omar Lima-Chavez, their Southeast executive, told us the history behind this great line and shared with us their philanthropic works which this year include the “Save the Sharks” palette featuring Spring’s best colors; 5% of the profits from this palette go to the Bloom Association, an organization working hard to preserve and save sharks from extinction.
A beauty company that truly cares…now that is something I can definitely support.

Maria watching a movie regarding the “Save the Sharks” campaign. So many sharks killed senselessly…truly a sad reality. Thankfully there are companies like Chantecaille that are willing to step in and make a difference.

After the introduction and video, we each had a chance to have our makeup done. I couldn’t wait to get into the chair and get my “face” on ;) I had the talented Omar give me a nice, natural look…absolutely perfect for the rest of my day.

To top it all off, Chatecaille also has a deliciously luxurious collection of fragrances. I shamelessly sprayed myself down in the Frangipane scent…it smells amazing. So romantic and feminine.

And of course, since I am not one to leave Saks empty handed, I stopped by the Chantecaille counter on my way out to pick up my very own rosewater. This product is simply perfect. Pure, refreshing, light and soothing. I 100% recommend it…I can see it will become my favorite product very quickly.

I am so happy I had a chance to “meet” this company. This is the first upscale, luxury brand of cosmetics that I know of to focus on a healthy, eco-friendly way of life and a conscious way of being. Hope you guys check them out next time you’re at Saks ;)
